Who’s Who in Haitian Diaspora Education
Education is the foundation upon which communities build their futures. For Haitian diaspora organizations, education work extends far beyond classroom walls; it encompasses literacy programs in rural Haiti, scholarship funds for first-generation college students in New York, after-school tutoring in Miami, and digital learning platforms connecting youth across borders. These organizations understand that education is both a practical necessity and a powerful act of cultural preservation, ensuring that the next generation remains connected to their heritage while gaining access to pathways to opportunity.
The Haitian diaspora education sector reflects the community’s deep commitment to learning as liberation. From organizations running schools in Plateau Central, Haiti, to those providing SAT prep in Boston, these nonprofits are responding to a spectrum of needs with creativity, cultural competence, and unwavering determination.

Church of Bible Understanding
We are a Christian church, and a large part of our operations is funding our missionary work in the impoverished country of Haiti, WI. We have been in Haiti since 1977 and are recognized by the Haitian government as an NGO. For many years, we operated an orphanage there, taking in cases of urgent need and providing for them into adulthood. In recent years, we have transitioned from an orphanage to supporting children and their families in their own homes, providing food, education, and medical care. In addition, we have a feeding program that provides food to needy families in the rural mountain regions above Port-au-Prince, as well as to many smaller Haitian-run orphanages. We also have two Christian group homes for young adults, most of whom grew up in our former orphanage, where we are helping them finish their education and learn trades to transition to adulthood. These young people are also instrumental in operating our other works in Haiti, including distribution.
Based in Scranton, PA, Church of Bible Understanding focuses on orphanages, religion, basic and emergency aid.
