We are proud to highlight and support those organizations driving change, empowering communities, and making a lasting impact locally and globally. With a focus on organizations that foster unity, advocacy, and social change, we have welcomed several dynamic entities to our Directory. These organizations each contribute in unique ways to uplifting the Haitian community and include Solidarité Fanm Ayisyèn (SOFA), The Haitian Roundtable (HRT), National Haitian American Elected Official Network (NHAEON), and Gypsy Ayiti. Here’s a closer look at the work of these impactful organizations.
Solidarité Fanm Ayisyèn (SOFA): Advocating for Haitian Women’s Rights
Solidarité Fanm Ayisyèn (SOFA), founded in February 1986, is a feminist organization committed to promoting and defending women’s rights in Haiti. SOFA’s approach is characterized by a protest-driven stance aimed at challenging the structures of subordination, domination, exclusion, and exploitation that Haitian women face.
The organization unites peasant women, women from working-class neighborhoods, and professional women, all working together for the freedom and empowerment of Haitian women. SOFA’s mission is deeply connected to the belief that the liberation of Haitian women is directly linked to the liberation of Haitian society as a whole. Their advocacy spans various issues, including gender-based violence, political participation, and economic independence.
The Haitian Roundtable (HRT): Redefining the Narrative of Haiti and Haitians
Founded in 2008, The Haitian Roundtable (HRT) is a not-for-profit organization of Haitian-American professionals committed to civic engagement and advancing strategic initiatives that benefit the Haitian community.
HRT works to heighten awareness of Haitians as a critical constituency among policymakers, thought leaders, newsmakers, and institutions. By fostering partnerships, organizing programs, and hosting events that recognize Haitian excellence, HRT’s mission is to redefine the narrative about Haiti and its people, pushing back against negative stereotypes while celebrating the strength, resilience, and cultural contributions of Haitians.
Guided by the motto, “As Haitians, We Are The Keepers of Our Legacy,” HRT’s work aims to amplify the voices of the Haitian community, ensuring their place at the table in discussions that shape the future of the Haitian diaspora and the nation.
National Haitian American Elected Official Network (NHAEON): Empowering Haitian-American Leadership
The National Haitian American Elected Official Network (NHAEON) is the largest network of Haitian-American elected and appointed officials in the United States. Founded with the goal of empowering Haitian-American leaders, NHAEON’s membership represents millions of constituents across the nation.
The organization is dedicated to supporting domestic policies, legislation, and issues affecting Haitians in the United States. NHAEON’s members work to ensure the political representation of Haitian-Americans, advocating for critical issues such as immigration reform, healthcare access, and disaster recovery.
By uniting Haitian-American elected officials, NHAEON strengthens the political voice of the Haitian diaspora, advancing Haitian-Americans’ interests through collective action. Their advocacy helps ensure that the needs of Haitian communities are addressed at all levels of government.
Gypsy Ayiti: Empowering Marginalized Youth in Haiti
Gypsy Ayiti is a transformative organization founded on the principles of social justice and committed to providing opportunities for marginalized populations to thrive and contribute meaningfully to Haitian society. The organization is specifically focused on empowering youth, particularly those from marginalized communities such as LGBTQ+ youth, disabled individuals, and others who are vulnerable.
