Organization to Know: Fondation Barbancourt
Highlighting Haitian-Led Institutions Driving Local Change
Why Fondation Barbancourt?
Pioneering as one of Haiti’s most recognized private foundations, Fondation Barbancourt stands out for its deep-rooted commitment to community well-being. Born from the renowned Rhum Barbancourt company, the Foundation stands as a model of how the private sector can invest in public good, directly implementing programs serving thousands of Haitians annually.
Fondation Barbancourt is not a grantmaking organization per se, but an operating foundation that conceptualizes and administers its own programs in core areas such as:
- Health: Through its health center, the Foundation offers free, available care to more than 1,000 patients per month, through its pediatrics, internal medicine, and gynecology services.
- Education: The Foundation supports Haiti’s next generation of leaders through scholarships and school infrastructure improvements. It is a strategic partner of the Haitian Education and Leadership Program (HELP).
- Youth & Sports Development: With a focus on football and basketball, hundreds of children participate in the Foundation’s youth programs, building discipline, teamwork, and leadership.
- Culture & Heritage: Through cultural initiatives, they aim to preserve and celebrate Haiti’s rich artistic legacy, ensuring it continues to inspire new generations.
What Sets Them Apart
What is particularly noteworthy about Fondation Barbancourt, however, is its direct engagement approach, aiming for high-impact, community-focused programming that does not involve an intermediary. This approach is conducive to making specific and sustained investments in the system, which is highly accountable. With a profound connection to the Haitian identity and a history of overcoming adversity, the Foundation becomes much more than a philanthropic division for the company. It becomes a cornerstone of Haitian society.
In Their Own Words
We managed to secure an exclusive interview with Delphine Gardere, the CEO and fifth-generation owner, who is also the chair of the Foundation. In this short video, they go through their priorities, definition of success, and challenges in such a complex society in Haiti.
Final Thoughts
As Centre NGO continues to advocate for more inclusive and collaborative philanthropy in Haiti, institutions like Fondation Barbancourt remind us that impact doesn’t always require intermediaries; sometimes, it just requires deep roots, clear vision, and committed leadership.
We are honored to highlight Fondation Barbancourt as an Organization to Know, and we would encourage all foundations, stakeholders, and organizations to learn more and stay engaged with them.
