Who’s Who in Haitian Diaspora Disaster Response

When a crisis strikes, whether an earthquake, hurricane, or political upheaval, Haitian diaspora organizations are often the first to mobilize. These are not distant observers shipping boxes from afar; they are embedded networks with deep community ties, cultural knowledge, and the trust required to deliver aid where it’s needed most. Disaster response in the Haitian context is also long-term work: recovery from the 2010 earthquake continues, and each new crisis layers onto existing vulnerabilities.

The organizations featured here represent a range of approaches to emergency response and recovery, from immediate relief to long-term rebuilding. They operate with the understanding that effective disaster response requires both speed and cultural competence, both resources and relationships.

While this list highlights 9 organizations making an impact in disaster response, it is not exhaustive. We welcome recommendations and insights on other nonprofits doing important work; feel free to share them with us.
