When we relaunched the Haitian Diaspora Engagement and Philanthropy Survey, our goal was ambitious yet…

Beyond Simply Posting a Flag, Here Are Five Ways You Can Honor Haitian Heritage This Month
Every May, we proudly commemorate Haitian Heritage Month—a time to raise our culture, remember our ancestors, and share our rich legacy with the world. Our pride is always evident, from hoisting the Haitian flag high to sharing cherished dishes and music soundtracks.
But what if this year, we did more than celebrate? What if we turned that pride into purpose?
By acting to improve the future of Haiti and its people, you may honor Haitian heritage this month in five significant ways.
Support Haitian-Led Nonprofits Doing the Work
Haitian-led nonprofit organizations are addressing educational deficits, fighting for legislative change, maintaining cultural legacy, and reacting to critical crises across Haiti and the diaspora. Though sometimes underfunded, these groups are firmly ingrained in the communities they serve.
Using our Nonprofit Directory, which vets and showcases organizations working on the front lines of change.
Share Resources, Not Just Stories
It’s one thing to share a quote from Dessalines or post a picture of Griot. It’s another to share grant opportunities, donor networks, or a platform that helps nonprofits grow. This month, shift your social media from performance to participation.
Tag Haitian organizations. Give. Offer pro bono skills. Connect them to your networks. That’s how culture keeps going.
Participate in the Haitian Diaspora Engagement in Philanthropy Survey
Haitian-led organizations receive less than 1% of all philanthropic funding. Think about that. Changing that starts with understanding, so we launched the Haitian Diaspora Engagement in Philanthropy Survey.
This data-driven effort is about more than numbers — it’s about reimagining how we give, who we trust, and what we invest in.
Take the survey or share it. Your input helps to create practical strategies for Haitian organizations.
Join a Platform Focusing on Haitian Solutions
Everyone, from donors to students to NGO leaders to caring people, can “do more” by working with networks to increase Haitian influence.
Centre NGO offers free and paid memberships that connect you with vetted nonprofits, curated resources, and training tools that support long-term success—not just charity.

Invest in the Future, Not Just the Past
Yes, let us celebrate the revolution. Let us narrate the tales of Toussaint Louverture, Catherine Flon, and Boukman. But let’s also talk about the present: youth organizing in their communities, mental health crisis hotlines serving people on the front lines, hospitals being forced to close their doors, people being forced to flee their homes and livelihoods, and women in the diaspora spearheading development initiatives.
Investing in present-day leaders and organizations helps us cultivate new seeds.
Haitian Heritage Month can be more!
This is a call to move from symbolic to substantive, from pride to action, from recollection to action.
Fly your flag high and support the individuals constructing Haiti’s future one program, one policy, and one donation at a time.
